Artist Statement
I took Photography 1 last semester to try something new and different. I had heard good things from friends and I wanted to take the opportunity while I could. It took me a while to get the hang of it but when I finally figured it out, I loved it. It was so fun to make the pictures from scratch and use my own hands to make them. I quickly decided that I wanted to continue doing this and expanding on what I had already learned, so I signed up for Photography 2.
In contrast to the first semester, I jumped right back into film photography and quickly relearned things I had forgotten. I started off with short contact sheets, but throughout the semester, I got better at taking the pictures. I have enjoyed the difficulty of Photo 2 because the unique topics and alternative processes make my photos more interesting and creative. My favorite thing to take pictures of are people because I like to try and capture their emotions and personality. I normally use my sister because she is always willing to strike a pose. I also like taking pictures of things up close. I like how the distance from the object can completely change the emotions of a photo. Close up pictures also capture all the small details and patterns that might other wise be blurred or overlooked. I have really enjoyed taking film photos and getting to develop them, even if it was stressful at times, and making them my own.
